Cagayan - #Project81Ph

Cagayan is one of the provinces included in Cagayan Valley Region. It is situated at the upper right edge of the Luzon Island, and it usually take 10 to 12 hours travel from Metro Manila.

Because of the weddings of my friends, I got to go places! First in Cebu, now in Cagayan. And of course, I would never miss the chance to explore what Cagayan has to offer.

Although series of unfortunate events happened before this trip, I was able to get through it and enjoy every second of this vacation :)

How to get to Cagayan?

If you are from Manila, ride a Florida Bus  (Lacson St) going to Tuguegarao City. There's a 20% discount for senior citizen only (unfortunately, no discount for students). The fare for the deluxe ride is 700 pesos, the bus is equipped with a bathroom and there is no picking of passengers at random places. The bus will only stop on designated Florida bus stops and then will allow passengers to ride. The travel time is around 10-12 hrs, depending on the traffic.

There is also a terminal in Cubao which has hourly trips until 10:00 in the evening.

It is better is you arrive early at the terminal because passengers usually increases during the weekends. You have to be seated in the most comfortable seat to endure and survive the 10-12 hours of travel.

The most common mode of transportation in Tuguegarao is tricycle for nearby places. Habal-habal (motorcycle) is also common too. There are UV Express vans  going to Sta. Ana where the Palaui Island is located.

Callao Cave

Callao Cave (pronounced as "Kalaw", not "Kalyaw") is believe to be submerged in the water long ago, because of the patterns of rocks brought about by the ocean waves. According to our guide, it has 8 chambers but only 3 are open because the remaining chambers are unexplored and dangerous because of the presence of snakes.

It is also famous because it has a chapel inside the cave, remember the movie, "The Mistress", which stars John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo, it was one of the locations for the movie. Personally, I really felt the solemness in the place, the perfectly placed hole in the cave where the sunlight dramatically reflects on the altar is just something. Also, I don't know if the rock formations were already altered by the locals or it is the natural form of it but it looks so stunning.

This sign will welcome you at the main entrance gate of Callao Cave. Entrance fee is 20.00 per person. Locals are free to enter the cave.

Before reaching the Callao Cave, you have to climb up stairs leading to its entrance. Do not worry if it's sunny, tree branches and leaves are abundant, it covers the stairway from the sun.

Halfway the stairs, there's a sort of Veranda where you can rest and see the whole Brgy. Penablanca and the stretch of Pinacanauan River.

A total of 184 steps is needed to get to the main entrance of Callao Cave, and it's really worth the climb once you see the inside of the cave. :)
